The World’s Most Thrilling Cycling Routes for Complete Amateurs

It is easy to think that the planet’s most thrilling cycling routes are only for tough and experienced cyclists that can handle anything. The rest of us have to make do with cycling to the shops or to the local park, don’t we?

Well, the truth is that there are some incredible routes that even complete amateurs can get a kick out of. The following are a few that everyone should try and ride on at least once in their lives.

London to Paris

One of the best ways of finding an exciting cycling route that you can take on safely is to look for charity challenges of this type. One of the classics in this sort of two wheeled adventure is the spectacular London to Paris ride.

Typically, this exhilarating challenge will see you spend 4 days riding to cover the almost 300 miles between the 2 world famous cities. As if riding from the UK capital to the French capital wasn’t enough for most of us, this can also be arranged so that you arrive on French soil in time to see the end of the Tour de France

You don’t need to be a cycling expert to take on this challenge, although you will need to be in reasonably good shape. The excitement when you ride up the Champs Elysees and past the Arc de Triomphe before reaching the Eiffel Tower is something that you will never forget.3

Death Valley

A bike ride along Death Valley sounds like, gulp, a bit of a tough task. However, it turns out that this is one of the most popular charity bike rides that people off all cycling abilities take on these days.

This trip to the infamous valley in the South California Desert is quite possibly going to be the most daunting but enjoyable thing that you ever do in your life. A typical riding challenge here will consist of over 400 km (250 miles) of riding through spectacular scenery.

It is only fitting that such a magnificent ride ends in the sparkling city of Las Vegas. What better way is there to celebrate the end of this achievement than by letting your hair down in one of the most exciting cities on Earth?

The South Downs

The UK is a wonderful country for cycling enthusiasts, although this is something that it is easy to take for granted. Finding a great cycling route here is easy but which one is the very best in the country?

One of the top contenders has to be the stunning ride along the South Downs to the west of Brighton. This is classic cycling territory and it gives you amazing scenery all the way.

The section above Beachy Head is particularly fantastic. You will go home feeling completely refreshed and invigorated after taking this trip on your bike.

You may have heard of some adventurous souls heading to Kilimanjaro to scale Africa’s highest mountain. However, did you know that it is also possible to take on an unforgettable cycling challenge here too?3

Another route that is popular with charity challenges is the one that takes you from the lower slopes of the iconic mountain to the UNESCO World Heritage site at the Ngorongoro Crater Reserve. This is a potentially life-changing ride, as you pass through amazing places and learn a lot about the planet and yourself at the same time.

Best of all, this isn’t as tough a ride as you might initially expect.  You will need to put in some effort but by doing it in a group with experienced guides you will also be able to relax and enjoy the whole experience too.

If it is climbs, endless views and beautiful scenery that you are after then you can’t do much better than head to Snowdonia on your bike. In particular, the southern part of this region is incredible for cycling around on.

You really will feel in a world of your own as you cycle along the Llanberis Pass or head down to Tremadog Bay. You don’t need to be an expert rider to take on this part of Wales but doing so might very well move your love of the sport onto a new level.

Wales has a number of other exciting cycling routes worth considering too. Indeed, no matter where you are in the UK there is almost certain to be a quality route nearby waiting for you to try it.

Don’t think that cycling for beginners and intermediates has to be boring. Instead, think about what kind of thrilling route you would most like to try and then go for it.
